Salt Box/Greek Revival
Middleton, MA
This addition to a traditional Greek Revival farmhouse preserved the original home and reworked the back drive to the old barn with a new three story Saltbox structure connected to the original house with an entry link. The challenge of this much needed expansion was to keep from overwhelming the original historic structure, while reusing the footprint of the old collapsed barn as an access point for the garage, and maintain a wonderful existing 100 year old maple.
The new 1000 s.f. family room addition above the garage included an open sleeping and study loft offering exceptional views over the rolling fields of the property. The salt box shape allowed a conversation between new and old roof lines while providing a useful link between the structures as pedestrian main entry to the home and gateway to the back open fields of this semi rural site.
