Carpenter Gothic, Rehab/Adddition

Newton Center, MA

This existing Carpenter Gothic Home listed on the Register of Historic Buildings in Newton Center received a 1,500 s.f. addition, carefully attached to the original structure. An existing one story addition was removed to make way for a more contextual and useful extension of the existing home. The new wing included a new master bedroom suite, kid’s bath and laundry on the 2nd floor, while a new entry, kitchen, powder, living room and breezeway filled out the new first floor plan.

Sharing a common drive with their neighbors in this historic neighborhood with garages out back, the new breezeway would become the primary entrance for this family of four. While it was important to pick up on the original lines of the formal Carpenter Gothic home, the owners were also looking for a more modern interpretation for the new addition, one that spoke of home and history, augmenting the scale and character of the original structure.
