New River Home
Clayton, NY
Originally conceived as a summer cabin and retreat, the owners of this island oasis fell in love with the idea of visiting this 1000 Island getaway deep into the fall and early in the spring. This notion led to a design for a fully insulated two bedroom four season home to protect them from the semi-polar conditions of this Canadian border region, as well as access to the grand beauty of The St Lawrence Seaway.
Working from the geometric purity of the square, the design of the home is dominated by the great room with overhead office loft for the owner and author who uses the home as a retreat for his work and young family, based in Europe. Picking up on the vernacular of River bungalows and larger 19th century homes of the Islands, the small 1200 s.f. home is coddled between the rock outcrops and surrounding tree cover of this small point on the western shores of Grindstone Island.
